Tiffany & Co NY Vernis Martin Gold Lacquer and Ormolu Rococo Clock

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A most stunning and very large Vernis Martin gold lacquer Rococo clock, mounted with ormolu (Doré Bronze or fine gilded bronze). It was retailed by Tiffany & Co of New York and has the company's mark on the dial and on the movement backplate. To the front is a charming scene of a soirée in a country setting, while the sides are decorated with ribbons and flowers. The gold lacquer is stunning, with a lovely antique glow and craquelure that can only come with age. Bronze mounts are finely modelled and beautifully finished.

The very large dial is enamel (porcelain) on copper with large fretted brass hands and convex glass.

The French movement is of the finest quality, a large, square plated movement with pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. We have fully overhauled the movement and tested it to ensure years of trouble free running. The pendulum is original and the movement strikes on a coiled gong at the halves and the hours. Have a look at the video below to see and hear the clock running.

Condition of the case is very good. The ormolu mounts are clean and bright. The gold lacquer is in good condition, there are some marks and wear, particularly to the sides, this is a very delicate finish. The surface has a wonderful antique craquelure and rich golden glow which catches the light beautifully. The scene to the front is in excellent condition. The dial is also in excellent condition with just some very faint hairlining. This is a very decorative and desirable clock, a great centrepiece for your room!

Tiffany & Co marks on the dial and backplate, J.E.D. is often seen on Tiffany's French movements.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
