A rare and superb sculptural clock depicting St Michael Slaying the Devil by Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. Exquisitely modelled in bronze patinated white metal, it shows St Michael standing triumphantly above the slain Satan, hounds baying to each side. A snake entwined around his body.

The sculptor's signature is impressed to the right hand side. The dial is bronze mounted with 12 enamel cartouches with blue lettering. It is complete with the superb original and specially made serpent hands. The clock is modelled in the round with a glazed rear door to allow the movement to be seen, you could display the clock in the middle of a room or in front of a mirror.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse Studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and debuted at the Salon of 1850 with two bronze medals. He went on to achieve fame both as an artist in his own right and for being the teacher of the world renowned Auguste Rodin. Rodin worked as an assistant in the studio of Carrier-Belleuse between 1864 and 1870. Pierre Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th Century.

*Guido Reni's painting of 1636 St Michael Archangel depicts St Michael wearing a Roman clock trampling Satan. Giuseppe Torretti's statue in the Baroque church of Santa Maria Assunta in Venice could also have been a source of inspiration to the sculptor.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original bronze patination is in lovely condition. The small tips of the hounds ears are missing on two ears, there some slight wear to the ends of Satan's wings. St Michaels sword and the right hand side of the base have been restored. Dial is excellent with no damage.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
