Japy Freres Large Antique French Gilt Brass Clock Set ~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A very large and impressive original antique French gilt brass clock set by the famous maker Japy Freres. It is in the Baroque style and features the winged goddess Nike to the front. Above her is a large dial with individual enamel cartouche letters, blued steel hands and convex glass.
Above the dial are a pair of mythical creatures sitting on the arched top of the case with a shield between. To the top of the case is a domed temple with four pillars. Candelabra are conforming in style, with four branches. This is a large and beautifully detailed clock set, with a lovely original gild. The rear door is glazed with frosted glass. The French movement is by Japy Freres and has the makers mark on the movement backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just a few tiny nibbles to the cartouches. Candelabra are slightly distorted. The rear door has some scratches to the glass. The set makes a stunning display as you can see below.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
