Huge Antique French Gilt Brass Clock
Samuel Marti

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A very large and impressive original antique French gilt brass clock, standing at 23 1/2" in height. It is in the Baroque style with a bold, waisted case, flowing floral swags, a large urn and sitting on its original integral base with hairy paw feet. To each side are grotesque masks. The dial is very pretty with floral swags and original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The design is bold, elaborate and well finished with good original gilding.

The retailer A Chapus is listed in Tardy's Dictionnaire Horlogers as working between 1880 and 1890 at 86 Rivolli Street in Paris

The French movement is of high quality and has both the marks of the clockmaker Samuel Marti and the Paris retailer A Chapus on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just some slight hairlining near the 1 o'clock. The original glass has some light scratches. A stunning focal point for your room!

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employe two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
