Large and Superb Antique Rococo Clock

An exquisite, large original antique French Rococo gilt brass table clock in lovely condition. The case is of classic Rococo design, bold, waisted keyhole shape with acanthus leaf shoulders, 'C' scroll feet standing on a serpentine base and surmounted by a charming figure of a cherub marking the passage of time with a sundial. The base is highly polished, allowing the reflection of the pendulum swinging within to be seen. Below the dial is a torché and quiver of arrows. To the sides are delicately fretted panels backed with red velvet. The design is beautifully bold and heavily moulded in gilt brass, well chased and finished. It is modelled in the round and so would display very well on a table.

The stunning dial is enamel on copper, convex in shape and fitted with the original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Samuel Marti. The makers mark is on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition. We have replaced the red velvet behind the sound frets.
