Japy Freres Lion Rampant Mantle Clock

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition ~~

A stunning gilt brass clock by the famous maker Japy Freres. Very heavy and finely modelled, this clock is of high quality and the original gilding is in quite exceptionally bright and fresh condition.

The clock is key hole shaped with a pair of lions flanking the dial. The dial itself is gilded brass mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches and the minute ring is engraved. Dial is covered by a convex bezel. Below the dial, to the front of the case is a stylised lion's mask. The clock is surmounted by a basket shaped top with vacant armorial shields with a two handled urn. The rear door is glazed with frosted glass.

The Japy Freres French movement is of this makers usual high quality and is fitted with the superior rack striking mechanism. Both the Japy Freres mark and the Paris retailers mark H and F and be seen on the movement back plate. It runs for 8 days, strikes on a bell and is in excellent, clean and running condition having been fully cleaned and overhauled by our clockmaker who has also replaced the missing pendulum with an antique example.

Condition of the case is excellent - there are no losses and the finish of the gilding is bright and clean. The dial is also in excellent condition with just a small chip to the seven o'clock cartouche. The clock displays beautifully as you can see below!

A stunning centrepiece for any room!
