A large and impressive clock set of very unusual shape and superb quality, profusely decorated in French Gothic style with a chinoiserie accent. Fire breathing Chinese dragons holding shields, form the stem of the candelabra, holding the four branches in their mouths. The clock case is equally spectacular, decorated in conforming chinoiserie style with dragons and crested heraldic birds. The front panel decorated with lotus. Engraved in gothic script around the dial is the Latin motto

' Mei Tems Vasse Reulent Hon Tems'

The dial is enamel on copper and has a pair blued steel hands which follow the chinoiserie theme of the clock.

The superb movement is by Vincenti et Cie and is in fully working, clean and running condition. It is complete with the original pendulum and bell. The movement features a Brocot pin-palette dead-beat escapement and rack striking. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a large sonorous bell - click the movie below to hear the bell.

Condition is excellent - the finish of the brass is very good - bright and clean. There are some very small areas of wear or discoloration but in general both the case and the candelabra are excellent. The candelabra arms are slightly distorted and there is an old repair to one of the sconces which is not visible except on close inspection. The dial is in very good condition - just some minor chipping around the winding holes and a faint hairline through the 8 and 4 o'clock positions.
