English Antique Grandfather Clock - Oak and Mahogany

Circa 1840

~ Clockmaker - Richard Westerman, Leeds ~

~~ Excellent Condition  ~~

A lovely oak and mahogany country Longcase Clock dated from around 1840. The case has oak sides, plinth panel and trunk door, which are a light to medium colour. Extensive use of mahogany veneer of a rich flame red has been used to good effect. The oak trunk door and plinth panels are highlighted with rosewood stringing. The dial is painted with a charming scene of boating on a lake before a large country house in a mountainous landscape. The spandrels are pretty sprigs of rose and regency fans.

Richard Westerman is listed as working in Leeds between 1834 and 1853. ref watchmakers and clockmakers of the world, Brian Loomes.

The clock runs for 8 days and strikes hourly on a bell.

The movement is in excellent clean and fully running condition having been cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. The seconds and calendar subsidiary dials are also fully functioning.

The case is in excellent condition, with a beautiful colour and finish. We have replaced the hood door glass, fitted a new lock and key hole escutcheon to the trunk door and carefully cleaned and re-polished the case. The dial has been sympathetically restored by our dial restorer. The hour and minute hands are original - we have cut new seconds and calendar hands to match. A piece of veneer has been replaced on the left hand side of the front of the trunk near the lock. On the right hand side of the arched pediment, a small piece of veneer has been replaced at some time. The main part of veneer may also have been replaced. We have cleaned and polished the original patera. We have also cut and fitted a replacement pair of back feet in oak. The plinth panel has had two small pieces of oak replaced on the right hand side, top and bottom. There are also two thin slithers of oak fitted each side of the plinth panel, which has moved slightly over time. As usual with an antique item, there are some minor knocks and bruises which only add to the antique charm of the clock. The clock is in stunning condition as you can see in the pictures below.

A lovely country tall case clock in excellent condition, ready to grace your home!
