Ormolu and White Marble Boudoir Portico Clock

A lovely ormolu mounted white marble portico clock. It is classical in style, tall and slender and very chic. It features the winged figure of Cupid carrying his torch to light the flame of love. The movement is held in a drum above the 4 columns and the pendulum, modelled in ormolu as a classical urn, swings beneath. The dial is very pretty, decorated with floral swags between the numbers. it is enamel on copper and is complete with its original fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is by A. D. Mougin and has the clockmakers mark on the movement backplate along with that of the retailer Georges Verhger et Fils, who is listed as working from 51 rue Sainte Anne in Paris. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish to the ormolu and there are no losses. There is some minor wear and discolouration to the original gilding. The marble is in very good condition, there are the usual tiny nibbles to the edges and some slight yellow staining in places. One column has a crack around it, although it is sound and strong, and there is some chipping / cracking at the ends of the columns, mostly at the rear. The rear door is slightly distorted but still closes ok. The dial is in excellent condition, just some very minor chipping to the edge.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
