Elegant Mahogany Cased Grandfather Clock

~~ Cooke and Co  ~~

Nottingham Circa 1855

~~ Excellent Original Condition ~~

Stunning mahogany veneered early Victorian 8-Day Tallcase in excellent condition. The arched dial is complete with rolling moon (showing the phase of the moon) alternating with ship in full sail and gothic ruin, and the spandrels depict girls as the four seasons.  Winter is warm and cosy, seated in a panelled drawing room with a roaring fire, Spring holds a floral garland and Autumn a basket of fruit and grapes.

The case is very elegant with corner pillars to the trunk and bobbin turned pillars to the hood. A rich figured mahogany is used for the case which is elegantly proportioned and looks great!

James Cooke is listed as working in Nottingham in 1855. Ref: Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 by Brian Loomes.

The dial is by the well known dial makers Walker & Hughes of Birmingham and is of very high quality.

Dial is original and has been carefully cleaned by our professional dial restorer.  Original brass hour, minute and date hands, seconds hand may be a later, but appropriate replacement. The glass is original.

Movement is excellent quality - Eight day movement, strikes the hours on a bell and is in excellent, clean and fully working order including the date and moon phase dials.

The minute and hour hands are original and have been repaired in the past to a high standard. A piece of the brass casing of the pendulum has cracked - this is minor and does not effect the running or display of the clock in any way. Click on the link below to see and hear the clock running. Weights and pendulum are original.

The case is in lovely and very original condition. We have replaced the cabriole feet in mahogany. As usual with veneered cases, the carcass has moved slightly causing some cracking of the mahogany veneer - there is some minor shrinkage of the veneers on the front of the clock. The hood door veneer has a couple of cracks - these only add character to the clock. A small piece of veneer has been replaced on the front of the trunk adjacent to the key escutcheon of the trunk door - this is hardly noticeable. There is a small piece of moulding missing from the top left hand side of the hood. A small piece of moulding has split away from the lower moulding of the plinth (just above the feet on the left hand side of the case). We have replaced the missing Partrae to the swan neck pediment and the ball and spire with good quality replica parts.

A wonderful, decorative Tallcase for any gracious interior.
