Japy
Freres White Marble and Ormolu Portico Clock Set ~ Antique French
- Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~
A beautifully restrained and chic Empire style
portico clock set by the famous maker Japy Freres. It is modelled in crisp white
marble with fine ormolu (finely gilded brass or bronze) mounts.
The clock is
held aloft in a drum on two white marble pillars with the ormolu sun burst
pendulum swinging visibly below. The capitals of the pillars
are hung with ormolu chains and topped with marble vases with pineapple finials.
The bases of the pillars are decorated with motifs of cornucopia. Candelabra are
conforming and have scrolling branches. The dial is white enamel on copper
with the most delicate laurel swag criss-cross hands, the design of which is
reflected in the bezel.
The French movement is of very high quality and has the Japy Freres
'Grande Medaille D'Honneur' mark on the movement backplate.
It is in excellent clean and running condition having
been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Ormolu pendulum is original. It runs for 8
days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear
the bell and watch the clock running!
Condition of the case is very good, ormolu mounts are clean and bright the marble has a good, clean polish. About us
- All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in
France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in
original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have
developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul
the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they
will run trouble free.
