Large
and Stunning Gilt Brass Clock Set ~ French - Circa 1890 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled and working ~~ A finely made antique French gilt brass clock set, beautifully and profusely decorated with floral swags, elaborate scroll work and musical trophies in the style of Louis XVI. The front of the case is fretted, allowing the pendulum to be seen swinging within the case. The original gilding is in stunning condition, bright and clean. Candelabra are conforming, and have arms modelled as delicate scrolled brackets. The dial is enamelled on copper with a cast brass centre. It has red half-hour markers and is complete with original blued steel hands. The French movement is by A. D. Mougin and has the makers mark on the movement backplate. It also has the retailers mark 'Barrard & Vignon, 18 rue commines, Paris' (Tardy lists the Parisian horlogers, Barrard et Vignon, as operating from rue Neuve Ménilmontant in 1860, and later from rue Commines - see Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, p. 31). The movement is of excellent quality and is in full working order having been overhauled by our clockmaker who has also replaced the pendulum. It runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. See the video clip below to watch the clock running. Condition of the case is
excellent with clean and bright finish and there are no losses. There is some
very minor wear to the original gilding on the high spots. The dial has some
hair lining, and some chipping and slight cracking around the winding holes.
Candelabra arms are slightly distorted.
