Charming Antique Country Grandfather Clock

~~ EVAN JONES, LLANDOVERY ~~

~ Circa 1840 ~

Just the right proportions for a country cottage, this pretty Grandfather Clock in dark oak and mahogany, has a super, naive, harvest scene to the painted arch dial.  A sweet country girl in her bonnet collects a corn sheaf, and at her side, a big redware harvest jug.  The spandrels are painted with cottages and farmhouses... very evocative of the Victorian pastoral idyll.

The oak is accented by mahogany - used to cross band the trunk door and panels. Delicate stringing has been used at the base of the trunk 1/4 pillars, which are reeded mahogany.  The hood door and the arch are also veneered with mahogany.

A dummy seconds hand and 2 faux winding holes have been used to give the impression that the clock is an 8 - day - these features are original to the clock.

We have cleaned and serviced the movement which is in excellent clean and working order. The movement is a thirty hour and strikes on bell.

Condition of the clock is excellent - ready to display in your home. The hands are original, although the dummy seconds hand may have been replaced at some time. We have carefully restored the dial, touching in the lettering and painting - the majority of the paint is original and the dial looks great! see the pictures below. There is a small crack in the top right of the hood door glass which is barely noticeable. We have replaced the seat board - the original was split and bowed. The new seat board is the same thickness as the old. The trunk door lock is missing. The case has had some restoration in the recent past. The arch of the hood looks like it has been re-veneered and the feet have been replaced. We think the case has been re-finished - looks great!

Super looking clock for your home!
