Japy Freres Sevrs Porcelain and Gilt Metal Clock Set

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition ~~

A large and stunning Japy Freres clock set of gilt metal mounted with the most exquisitely painted porcelain, with pompadour blue ground in the manner of Sevrs. The two urns are painted with scenes of ladies of leisure. One is playing a harp next to a classical ruin and the other is painting. The dial is decorated with a cherub and a bow and quiver of arrows and is also signed by the Paris retailer Henry Marc. The reverse of the dial is signed by the artist and numbered with the wholesalers number (HP and Co). Above the dial a further porcelain panel shows a young lady dancing with a tambourine in front of a ruin. The other panels are very delicately painted with floral swags and wild birds. The case itself is very well modelled and is of Louis XV waisted shape with two winged water carriers to the side of the case. The case makers mark Brunfaut is on the rear of the case.

The set is complete with its original suite of gesso bases which are covered with the original blue velvet.

The Japy Freres movement is of this makers usual high quality. It runs for 8 days and strikes half hourly on a bell and is complete with a replacement pendulum and bell. It has been fully overhauled by our clock maker and is in excellent working order. Click the movie below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition is very good, the gilding is worn in places. The porcelain is also in very good condition with no chips or cracks except for one. There is a fine crack to the panel to the left of the dial, this is only noticeable on close inspection, see the picture below. There is some wear to the over glaze decoration on one of the urns and on the lower panel on the clock, the dial and the rest of the panels have excellent over glaze gilt decoration. There is a repair to the case below the lower panel which is hardly noticeable. We have replaced the missing ball feet with replicas cast from brass. The gesso bases are in excellent condition with some chips and minor wear. The velvet is clean and just has some wear to the edge and some minor marking where the clock has stood on it. The set looks absolutely stunning as you can see in the pictures below!

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
