Antique French Porcelain Table Clock - love and courtship

Circa 1850

~ Clockmaker - Marshall et Fils, Paris ~

~~ Excellent Condition  ~~

A Superb and rare porcelain cased clock, the case by the Paris factory of Jeune Gille, which specialised in the Biscuit porcelain that is used to model the figures on this clock. The superb movement is by the clockmaker Marshall et Fils of Paris.

The main body of the clock is hard paste porcelain, decorated with over glaze gilt, this is surmounted by the exquisitely modelled biscuit group of a courting couple, he is presenting her with a gift of jewels from the casket before them. A small amount of colour and gilt has been used to decorate the biscuit porcelain to beautiful effect. Both the biscuit group and the body of the clock bear the mark of the Jeune Gille factory.

Unusually, the dial surround is silver plated, which sets of the clock well. The dial is enamel on copper and is signed by the clock maker, as is the back plate of the movement. The reverse of the enamel dial bears the clocks serial number, as does the surround. The clock has its original velvet covered gesso base.

The factory of Jeune Gille was founded in 1845. This factory, located in the Rue de Paradis-Poissonnière, specialized in the production of biscuit porcelain (unglazed). Models of heads and also figurines. It's possible that this factory preceded the factory of Dione & Baudry.

The clock runs for 8 days and strikes half - hourly on a bell.

Condition of the case is very good. There is a chip to the head dress of each figure - both are small and only noticeable on close inspection. The gesso base is in good condition - there are some losses, mainly at the rear. The velvet covering of the top is a little aged and worn - however this only adds to the antique appearance of the piece. There is some minor rubbing to the over glazed gilt decoration on the high spots.

The dial is enamel on copper and is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips. The movement is in excellent clean and fully running condition having been cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. The pendulum is an old replacement.
