Rare Japy Freres Porcelain Table Clock - Fontainebleau Porcelain

Circa 1865

~ Japy Freres ~

~~ Excellent Condition  ~~

A large porcelain cased clock by Japy Freres. The case is by the famous Fontainebleau pottery from just outside Paris - the mark is on the reverse of the case, on the base. Gorgeous case of impressive proportions, very beautifully modelled and delicately coloured.  A Muse, elegant and serene, stands in Romanesque drapery, holding a scroll in her left hand and a rose in her right.  'Little Genius' sits at her feet with the emblems of time, an hour glass in his left hand, his right hand points to America on a globe, at his feet, the chapter ring of a clock.

The Fontainebleau factory was situated near the fabulous Fontainebleau Palace, just outside Paris, was bought in 1830 by two brothers, Jacob and Mardochee Petit. They made a great quantity of wares of all kinds, brightly painted and heavily gilt, heavily modelled but decorative in appearance. Clock cases and vases are found commonly. The factory was taken over by E. Jacquemin in 1862 - when the mark was changed to the one that this clock bears.

The clock runs for 8 days and strikes half - hourly on a bell.

Condition of the case is very good. There is some damage to the bocage around the base and also one missing piece next to the dial - see pictures below - this does detract from the piece. The flower in her hand may have been re-attached at some time. The dial is enamel on copper and is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips. The movement is in excellent clean and fully running condition having been cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. The pendulum is an old replacement.

      Dimensions: Height 17", Width 14 1/2", Depth 8".

A stunning clock for any elegant home ~ A centrepiece for your collection or inventory.

Complete with key, pendulum and original bell!
