Japy Freres Lions Rampant Portico Table Clock

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A very decorative gilt brass portico clock by the famous maker Japy Freres. It features lions rampant forming the final and also the four pillars. The movement is held aloft by the four pillars in a drum case, the pendulum swinging visibly below. Pendulum is also gilded brass and is formed as a coat of arms. The whole is mounted on a scalloped base which stands on four ball feet. The clock is elaborately and finely modelled, and is decorated in the round so would look great on a table.

The dial is also gilt brass and is mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches. It is complete with its original blued steel hands and convex bevelled glass. The rear door of the clock is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is by Japy Freres and has the makers 'Grande Medaille D'Honneur' mark on the movement backplate. It is of this maker's usual high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches.

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
