Early Ormolu Antique French Clock ~ French - Circa 1830 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A substantial and glorious, original early antique French clock of the most stunning quality and condition. Standing at almost 2 feet in height, it is most exquisitely modelled and finely chased, crisply modelled in ormolu (fire gilded bronze or doré bronze), in excellent clean and bright original condition. It dates from around 1830 and has the Honoré Pons gold medal 1827 mark on the movement backplate. It features and artist, resting on an ancient architectural ruin, drawing in a sketch book. To his side is his folio, Mahl Stick and brushes. The base is decorated in the classical taste with bold acanthus leave scrolls, laurel swags and a panel of artists tools.
The dial is beautifully engine turned and silvered, mounted in a gilt bronze rope bezel and fitted with blued Breguet steel hands. The French movement is of excellent quality and is the early design with silk suspension and outside hammer stop spring. Honoré Pons is listed in Baillie and Tardy and is credited as reviving the clockmaking industry in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont near Dieppe. He was sent there in 1806 by the Minister of the Interior and over the next decades built up clockmaking there until his death in 1857. This movement has the mark of "gold medal 1827" on the backplate, see picture below. Movement is in excellent, clean and running condition having been fully cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. Click the movie below to hear the bell and watch the clock running. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some wear, mostly to the sides and rear of the case. The dial is also in excellent condition. As usual with this type of case, there is no back door, just the original brass ring to secure the movement and dial.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. A superb treasure to add to your collection.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
