Beautiful French Portico Clock

 ~ Charles X style, circa 1840 ~

by Lain Paris

Good original condition.

Sumptuous Rosewood veneer, inlaid with marquetry and stringing.

The clock is typical of the classical style - lightened with the French taste for floral decoration. The floral marquetry is reflected in the fine quality cast brass and gilded dial surround and a small rococo touch to the pendulum bob with acanthus leaves and vacant cartouche.

The dial has an engine turned finish and is silvered and engraved with the letters. An interesting feature is the upper pendulum which is cast with a scene of two Romans holding a dog - we can not find a reference for this.

The movement is of high quality and strikes the hours and halves on a bell Click here to Hear the Clock Striking. It is in good un-restored clean working order and keeps good time. The clock is in generally good un-restored condition - A few minor faults as you would expect with a clock of this age. The dial has two small fatigue cracks which you can see in the pictures - due to the brass becoming brittle with age. The movement and the dial are stamped with the serial number 999. There are some minor veneer losses and back cover is missing - don't let any of this put you off - this is a fabulous piece. Click to Watch the clock running.
