Antique French Ormolu Rococo Boudoir Clock Set ~ A. D. Mougin ~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A beautiful original Antique French Rococo clock set. It is stunning in its original ormolu (fine gilded bronze) which is bright and clean. The case is of classic Rococo design, waisted, keyhole shape with acanthus leaf shoulders, 'C' scroll feet standing on a serpentine base and surmounted by a charming figure of a cherub marking the passage of time with a sundial. Candelabra have branches of stylised flowing and twisted foliage, standing on round bases. The front, rear and sides of the the clock have velvet lined fretted panels.
The design is beautifully bold and heavily moulded in gilded brass, well chased and finished. It is modelled in the round and so would display very well on a table but is also narrow enough to sit on most mantles. Dial is beautifully chic, enamel on copper, it is complete with its original delicately fretted brass hands and convex glass. The French movement is by A. D. Mougin and is of this makers usual high quality, their mark is on the movement backplate along with that of the retailer's mark. It is in clean and fully working condition and is complete with an old replacement pendulum. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell, the video clip below shows the clock running and striking. The finish of the set is excellent - bright and clean and no losses. There are a few very minor areas of wear or discoloration. The dial is in excellent condition with no chips or scratches, just a very small hairline near the one o'clock, this can't be seen with the bezel closed. We have replaced the red velvet with new. The set displays very well as you can see below!
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
