Simply stunning Oak and mahogany cross banded Victorian 8-Day Tallcase in excellent condition. The painted dial shows a scene looking over the nearby Menai straights. In the foreground is a ferry boat with people walking up the lane towards us. You can just make out Thomas Telford's famous Menai Straights suspension bridge in the background. Click here to see the bridge as it is today. The bridge was completed in 1826. The backboard of the case is stamped by the case maker "W.G." The case is very elegant with bobbin turned corner pillars to the trunk and the hood. The oak is a lovely medium oak. A rich red and flame figured mahogany is used for the front of the hood door and the top of the trunk. The case is well proportioned and looks great! John Griffiths is listed as working in Bethesda in 1856. Ref: Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 by Brian Loomes. Bethesda is a small market town in North Wales near to the Menai straights. The movement is in very good condition - it is clean, running, and keeping good time. It is of 8-Day duration and strikes hourly on a bell The gut line has been replaced by us with real gut. The dial is in lovely original condition, the edges of the dial have been touched in some years ago - most of the painting is original. The hands are original. One weight is original, one is a replacement, we have replaced the pendulum due to the poor condition of the original. Click to hear the clock strike!, Click here to watch the clock run The case is in excellent and very original condition. The glass is original. Just a few very minor losses of veneer - mainly to the edges of the base - as one would expect with any antique item. The feet of the plinth may have been replaced some time ago and the swan neck pediment may have been repaired/refinished and the patrae replaced. We have cleaned and polished the case - the clock looks great as you can see in the pictures below. A very attractive and original clock - a stunning centerpiece for your Victorian Home! Dimensions: Height 88 1/2", Width 23", Depth 9"
