Japy Freres Antique Gilt Brass Clock Set - Massive! ~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition ~~ A monumentally large and heavy clock set by the famous maker Japy Freres. Case and candelabra are beautifully made from gilt brass, French Gothic in style, decorated with the Goddess Nike, dragons and lions masks. The body of the clock is architecturally modelled of open fret work with an arched top. Candelabra have conforming bases and have six braches, with a central seventh sconce. The fret work helps to lighten the design, although this is still a clock set that will require a substantial mantle to sit on. Superb large enamel dial is 6" in diameter and is complete with the original blued steel hands and convex bevelled glass. Japy Freres movement is of excellent quality, runs for 8 days and strikes half-hourly on a bell. Backplate has the clockmakers mark. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. We have replaced the missing pendulum. Click the movie below to see and hear the movement working! Condition of the dial is
excellent with just some minor chipping around the winding holes. Condition of the case is
very good with clean and bright finish. There is some wear and discolouration to
the gilding, beneath a good later lacquer. Candelabra arms are distorted, one
has an old repair which is strong and not noticeable, see the picture below. The
fretted strap work which goes around the top of the candelabra arms has been
repaired on both candelabra at the rear, this is not noticeable from the front.
Both candelabra are slightly off-vertical. This clock set makes a stunning
display and would look its best on a large mantle. Candelabra are almost flat
backed and hence the set would stand well on a mantle with 9" depth or more, but
this would have to be strong! A rare chance to add this stunning set to your collection! Dimensions of clock: Height
32 1/4", Width 16 1/4", Depth
8 1/2".
