Antique French Ormolu, Bronze and White Marble Clock - Bacchus and Ariadne ~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A large and stunning, original French antique, classically designed clock of exceptional quality. White marble base is mounted with ormolu (fine gilded bronze or bronze doré) and patinated bronze. It features Bacchus and Ariadne with a panther, eating grapes and drinking wine. Both figures are beautifully modelled and finished in bronze with a lovely deep brown patina.
The heavy white marble base is mounted with bronze plaques depicting classical scenes. The movement is mounted in an ormolu drum set in a naturalistically modelled base of rocks and grass. The large dial is enamel on copper, decorated with delicate floral swags and finely fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The French movement is by A. D. Mougin and has the makers mark on the backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the ormolu has a beautiful original gild which is bright and clean. The gilding on the bronze plaques is worn. The bronze is also in excellent condition with a clean and even original patina. The dial is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches. The white marble is on good condition with the usual nibbles to the edges, a couple of chips to the right hand side and some staining and discolouration. It has a good polish.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
