Large Early Ormolu Antique French Rococo Clock
Silk Suspension movement by Honoré Pons
.

~ French - Circa 1830 ~

~~ Excellent condition, very original, fully overhauled ~~

A superb and beautiful, original early antique French Rococo clock of the most stunning quality and condition. It dates from around 1830 and has the Honoré Pons gold medal 1827 mark on the movement backplate. It is crisply and finely modelled in ormolu (fine gilded bronze) in a typically flamboyant Rococo design and has its original gild which is in lovely, untouched condition. The case is deeply waisted with elaborate 'C' scrolls and foliage. The front, sides and rear have elaborately fretted panels through which the pendulum can be seen swinging. The top is surmounted by a large finial of beautifully modelled flowers. The clock sits on an integral base, also heavily and finely modelled in the Rococo taste. This is a most stunning large and heavy early clock in fine condition, clocks of this age and quality are rare and highly prized.

The dial is also gilded bronze, mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches. It is complete with original finely fretted hands. The rear door of the clock is glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of excellent quality and is fitted with the earlier silk suspension. The clockmaker is Honoré Pons, is listed in Loomes and Baillie and is credited as reviving the clockmaking industry in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont near Dieppe. He was sent there in 1806 by the Minister of the Interior and over the next decades built up clockmaking there until his death in 1857. This movement has the mark of "gold medal 1827" on the backplate, see picture below. Movement is in excellent, clean and running condition having been fully cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. Click the movie below to hear the bell and watch the clock running.

Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish and there are no losses. There is some very minor wear/discolouration/light surface scratches to the original gilding but in general the gilding is excellent and original. The dial has some small nibbles around some of the cartouches and as usual with early cartouches, some have faded from blue to dark blue/black.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. A superb treasure to add to your collection.

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
