Alabaster Portico Clock Surmounted by a Lion

~ French - Circa 1860 ~

Very attractive alabaster portico clock, reminiscent of the grand tour trophies. The lion is finely carved and the dial surround, dial centre and pendulum are ormolu. Altogether a very good quality piece.

The movement is of excellent quality and is in running order. It could however, do with a clean and a service. The movement is original to the case - a cellophane dust cover has been made and fitted at some time, around the movement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell.

Condition of the the movement is good and original. It runs very well and keeps good time. The condition of the case (as usual with this delicate alabaster) is poor - however this only adds to the charm of these pieces, making them even more like the classical ruins of Rome and Athens. There are numerous faults and repairs - please see the pictures below for full details. The base has been repaired and some pieces of the applied carving are missing. There is a large chip to the front right hand side of the top of the base and smaller chips at the rear. The four columns are in good condition. The dial lettering is worn and slightly tarnished. The carved flowers have been re-applied to the front of the top and there are some pieces missing. Some of the dentil moulding has been re-applied. The lion and its base have been repaired in numerous places. The lion is complete although the base has a piece at the rear missing. Although generally dirty and in poor condition, the case is solid and looks great. The carving of the lion is particularly well carried out.
