Dramatic French Gilt and Bronzed Figural Clock - Japy Freres

~ Victorian circa 1860 ~

Fantastic clock depicting Jean Bart on the bow of his vessel sailing into battle, ready to board the enemy ship. The clock really captures the excitement of the scene with fine modeling and casting.

Jean Bart was a French navel hero, born in 1651 - he rose through the ranks, battling with the English in 1691, and then in 1694 his crowning glory - recapturing 200 vessels from the Dutch in a desperate struggle. He returned proudly and triumphantly to Dunkirk where a bronze statue stands today. (ref. P.D.G Pugh - Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian era)

The clock is in excellent and original condition. The movement, dial surround and pendulum are all marked with matching serial numbers.

The movement is by the famous makers Japy Freres and we have fully cleaned and serviced it in our workshop - It is in full working order and strikes the hours and the halves on a bell - click here to hear the bell.

The case is in very good condition with only one minor repair to the flag hanging from the ships rigging - which is hardly noticeable - otherwise the case is perfect. The case is gilt and bronzed metal with alabaster panels.

A great find for the military enthusiast or wonderful decorative accent for your home.
