~ Victorian ~ This is a beautiful gilt metal pillar clock in the neo-classical manner - a cherub bears the weight of the clock housed in a drum above his head - laurel wreaths and a reeded column. The capital that the cherub holds is decorated with sunflowers. The modelling of the piece is excellent. Condition is very good - as you would expect some wear to the gilt. The movement is an excellent French 8-day with platform escapement - probably a slightly later replacement for an inferior tic-tac or other small pendulum movement. The movement has been serviced and is clean and running. The hands are old replacements and the dial has been refinished to a high standard - this clock displays perfectly as you can see in the pictures below. Very original French Tallcase Morbier clock with painted pine case. Everything is original - the glass, dial, pendulum, movement, winder... The Clockmaker E Leclerc has signed the dial and the case - see the pictures below. The clockmakers home town is Vire - a small town in Brittany about 30 miles from the famous Mont-St-Michel. This clock dates from around 1870. The condition of the original painted pine case is just stunning - the paint has mellowed to a burr walnut effect with a deep patina - one of the nicest I have seen. There are some shrinkage cracks as you would expect, the bottom is a little ragged and there is some old worm damage - but all this adds to the delight of this clock - far better than having restoration. You can just see the painted sheaths of wheat on the base in the picture below. Large visible pendulum makes this clock fascinating to watch! I have cleaned the movement - being a "sleeper" meant that years of dust and corrosion had to be removed - surprisingly under the grime the movement is in great condition and is now fully running and keeping time. It is of 8 days duration and strikes a large gong on the hours and halves. The dial is a little chipped and battered and one movement metal side panel is missing (you cant see this from the outside of the case) - but only the most fastidious will be put off by this.

A lovely autumnal clock. Condition is excellent, case has been cleaned and burnished with gilt wax. This is a particularly finely cast case - have a look at the enlarged pictures here. The movement is a good quality French 8-Day which strikes half hourly on a bell. It has been cleaned in our own workshop and is running. The bottle shaped urns are decorated with landscapes while the clock has landscapes to the pillars and cherubs to the front porcelain panel and the porcelain finial. The style is tasteful and restrained as is typical of good quality French Clocks. The movement is good quality by the well known and renown makers A.D Mougin. The case is in very good condition - looks like it may have been re-finished some time ago. There is just a small repair to one of the columns which is hardly noticeable and does not effect the display. The clock is complete with its three wooden bases which are covered with velvet and edged with gesso. The gesso has worn through to the orange/red under paint and the velvet is worn giving a real shabby-chateau to the piece. The case was originally blackened with tin oxide which over the years fades to a dark gray/brown with some patches of lighter gray or brown - this lends the case a lovely patina. The case is in very good condition with only a couple of very minor chips to the left hand front corner which you can see in the pictures. The minute hand has been replaced by one faithful to the original at some time. The movement is in very good condition and has been cleaned by us. ~ Victorian circa 1860 ~ Fantastic clock depicting Jean Bart on the bow of his vessel sailing into battle, ready to board the enemy ship. The clock really captures the excitement of the scene with fine modeling and casting. Jean Bart was a French navel hero, born in 1651 - he rose through the ranks, battling with the English in 1691, and then in 1694 his crowning glory - recapturing 200 vessels from the Dutch in a desperate struggle. He returned proudly and triumphantly to Dunkirk where a bronze statue stands today. (ref. Next to the clock is a collection of implements. The porcelain dial and plaques are very attractive and are in the manner of 18th century Sevrés examples with Pompadour Blue ground - the dial is painted with a landscape - a small estuary with a dock - and the plaques are decorated with implements. The Base of the clock is lapped by waves and has a dolphin riding the surf before the goddess. ~ Lovely Original Condition ~ Very unusual 30hr wall clock from the Black Forest region of Germany. The dial surround is very primitive and decorative - the design is pressed into the sheet metal probably from a carved wood pattern. The dial itself is enameled and the frame is gesso - lacquered black and highlighted with gilt which is now nicely worn. The original hands finish of the dial. ~ ANGEL ~ Circa 1865 This super quality clock is cast and gilded brass. Depicting a romantic Angel playing an organ, the open book at her side reads "Glory to God with Good Music". Gorgeous Gothic motifs. The eight day movement strikes the hours and half hours on a bell and is stamped with the makers name 'Poupin A' Paris' as is the white enamel dial. Victorian - Circa 1860 ~~ Charles Keates - Belper ~~ Simply stunning Oak and mahogany veneered Victorian 8-Day Tallcase in excellent condition. The painted dial shows a coastal scene and architectural scenes in the spandrels. The case is very elegant with reeded quarter corner pillars to the trunk and bobbin turned pillars to the hood. A rich red and flame figured mahogany is used for the front of the hood and the top of the trunk is inlaid with a marquetry panel of horses and a bird. The trunk door and the plinth also have inlaid marquetry panels. The case is elegantly proportioned and looks great! The hands are original except for the second hand which we have hand cut a replacement for the damaged original. The seat board has a split, rather than replace the seat board we have kept the original seat board and fitted two small brackets to support the seat board. This works well and is not unusual. We have cleaned and polished the case - the clock looks great as you can see in the pictures below - the minor faults in no way detract from this piece. America, serene beauty in feathered headdress, bow and quiver. Africa, splendid with jewelry in her hair and tamed lion at her feet. War-like Europa, a Valkyrie with white horse and foaming stein. The case is Oak and Mahogany veneered - Splendid flame mahogany, quarter matched for the hood door and subtlety inlaid with stringing. Victorian - Circa 1880 ~~ Spencer and Co - Birmingham ~~ Simply stunning mahogany veneered Victorian 8-Day Tallcase in excellent original condition. The painted dial shows an English country estate with the gate house in the foreground with the landscape leading up to the grand country mansion in the distance. The case is very elegant with reeded corner pillars to the trunk and hood, with Corinthian capitals to those of the trunk. A rich red and flame figured mahogany is used for the front of the case which sits upon carved caddy feet. The hands are hand cut replacements for the damaged originals. One weight is original, one is a replacement, we have replaced the pendulum due to the poor condition of the original. A strengthening piece may have been added to the bottom of the backboard - although this could be original. Just a few minor losses as one would expect with any antique item - a few pieces of stringing missing (one piece on one of the arches of the trunk door one along the top right hand side of the pedestal and one on the base of the trunk just above the pedestal) , a piece of veneer about 3/4" square on the arch of the hood has been replaced, there are 2 holes in the patrae (probably where the original nails held them on, and some very very slight cracking to some veneer as usual with any veneered carcass. There is a piece missing from the top of the left hand hood pillar - you can see in the picture below - this faces towards the rear and hence does not detract from the display of the clock. The clock looks great as you can see in the pictures below - the minor faults in no way detract from this piece. The glass is original. A stunning centerpiece for your Victorian Home! ~~ by W. Muncaster, Whitehaven. ~~ Circa 1830 A Simply Stunning Clock - medium oak case with mahogany veneer and faux bamboo pillars to the hood. The reeded corners are typical of country clocks of this period. The delightfully painted dial features a classically dressed maiden with a lion at her feet, and a rather whimsical horse or donkey, peeping through the trees. Perhaps the goddess Cybele who rode on a lion? Beautifully naively painted....the expression on the lion's face is so quaint! John Muncaster is listed as working in Whitehaven in 1834 about the time this clock was made. Ref: Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 by Brian Loomes. We can assume that W Muncaster was a relation of John, perhaps his Father, Son or Brother. The Arabic numerals and the Classic William IV Style of the Spandrels date this clock in the 1830's. by Japy Freres Japy Freres is perhaps the most well known and productive of the French clockmakers - here we have a fine example of their work. Very much a development of the Louise XV style, this clock features flowing rococo curves, 'C' scrolls, floral decoration, and fret work giving the design delicacy and lightness. The Case is well cast in brass and it is of considerable weight. There is a real sharpness to the casting which again demonstrates the quality of this piece. Very attractive oak case with flame mahogany and rosewood inlay. Most of the
front of the case is veneered in flame mahogany with rosewood. The door and
the center of the plinth are oak. Carved swan-neck pediment to the hood and
bobbin-turned pillars in mahogany. The dial is delightfully painted with hunting scenes - the master is seen in the arch following a pair of hounds with the fox disappearing into the distance. The spandrels are painted with individual hounds generally having fun. The original gilt brass hands add the finishing touch to the dial. John Galloway is listed as working between 1850 and 1870 in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' Vol 2 by Brian Loomes. We date the clock around 1850 to 1860 based on its style. The movement is 8 day in duration and strikes a bell on the hour. The dial is fitted with a seconds and calendar subsidiary dials - the calendar is inoperable Click to hear the movement strike Condition is very good and original. The movement has been cleaned by our clockmaker and is running and keeping good time. The case has had some minor work in the past. In common with most country clocks the back feet have been replaced because of the effects of damp, similarly the bottom quarter of the back board has been reconstructed. The work is strong and neat and does not detract from this piece. As you would expect a few pieces of veneer have been replaced and there are some minor marks - you can see in the enlarged images. The trunk door has a repair - invisible from the front - the door has been glued and clamped back together and has some brass strapping on the reverse to reinforce the repair. ~ Circa 1870 ~ A feast of Gothic style here with grotesque creatures and lions masks - very nicely modeled heavy brass case and candelabra. The dial is especially good - brass with repoussé decoration and individual porcelain cartouche figures in the 18th century manner. The 8-day movement is of high quality and strikes a bell on the hours and the halves - it is typical of the well made French movements from this period. Condition of the movement is excellent - clean and running. The pendulum is a faithfully reproduced replacement - the original pendulum was badly effected by corrosion. The case is in good condition with no missing parts except the drip pans from the candelabra - this does not in any way detract from this piece - the candles fit in the candelabra just fine as you can see in the pictures. The gilt is worn and some verdigris is visible here and there giving a lovely shabby chateaux patina to this piece. We have lightly waxed the case and candelabras to brighten the gilt. ~ French - Early 20th Century ~ Wonderful early electric clock with solenoid impulsed pendulum. This is one of the earlier models with a visible pendulum. These clocks are very nicely made as you can see in the pictures below. It ran from a 1.5v Leclanche cell originally but now has a small and unobtrusive modern battery "D cell" fitted inside. Condition is excellent and it looks like it has been restored - It looks like it will run but I confess that I haven't managed to get it going myself! The case is oak and in very good condition - minor faults are the missing knob from the back door and the silvered dial is a little tarnished and marked. Faux marble mantle clock by Ansonia New York. Has the typical large Ansonia movement which is clean and running. The pendulum is not original but the clock keeps time with it. The clock strikes half hourly on a coiled gong. The case is a slightly gothic design - with gilt painted rams heads. The dial is the better quality version with enamel chapter ring and pressed brass egg and dart surround. The bezel is pressed brass. The case is adorned with a faux variegated green marble panels. Condition is very good. As usual with cast iron cases the enamel is chipped along the edges and some of the gilt paint has chipped on the rams noses and the gilt feet. The iron has taken a pleasing brown patina where the enamel is chipped. I think the gilt adornments have been repainted some years ago as the color is surprisingly fresh. The case has had very little restoration work as we found it in this beautiful condition. Original keyhole escution and patrae. Square painted dial and swan neck pediment. This a very chic German clock with a good quality striking movement. It strikes the hours and halves on a large coiled gong. The case is nicely made and has inlaid stringing and solid turned brass columns. The dial has a replacement card dial in place of the original which was probably celluloid - It has been well fitted and looks good. ~ Stunning Flame Mahogany ~ by Edward Hurst - North Shields (1848 - 1858) A very chic flame mahogany Tallcase Clock from Northumberland. The case is beautifully veneered in flame mahogany with book matched veneers and shows classical taste with columns complete with acanthus leaf capitals. Condition of the movement is excellent, clean and running. We have have replaced the calendar wheel so that the calendar works properly and cleaned and bushed the movement as necessary. The dial has been professionally restored to repair a patch of damage - this is invisible. The dial looks stunning as you can see in the pictures. We have replaced the seconds hand and the hour hand with perfect matches of the damaged originals. The case is in good original condition. As you would expect with a veneered case the carcass has moved causing some slight cracking in the veneer - this has occurred on the front of the base, the sides of the trunk and to the trunk door - this is very minor and only adds to the character of this clock. There are some minor veneer loses but nothing that in any way detracts from this piece. Edward Hurst is listed as working between 1848 and 1858 in North Shields. ~ Circa 1870 ~ Finely painted Sevrés Style porcelain set this clock apart. The painted courtship scenes on the urns and the clock are beautifully executed. The clock also has a porcelain dial painted with a landscape and landscapes to the plaques of the urn bases and clock columns. The metal case is crisply cast and is decorated in typical French manner with allegories of love - quiver of arrows and the torch. Movement is of high quality and strikes a bell on the hours and halves - click to hear the movement strike. We have cleaned and serviced the movement which is in excellent condition and running well. This Clock depicts the sculptor carving a cameo of a lady - holding his work up to an old window, entwined with ivy. The case is adorned with floral decoration to finish this romantic piece.
