Louis Auguste Moreau
(1834-1917)

~ French - Circa 1900 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully working ~~

A Stunning, Large Antique French boudoir clock by the famous sculptors L & F Moreau. It features a beautifully modelled figure of a young girl reclining in a garden. A charming figure of a cherub plays a stylised lyre as she listens attentively. Effortlessly sculptured with a light-hearted realism, she is full of life and movement. The clock is beautifully made in patinated bronzed metal mounted on a variegated specimen marble base and is in very good condition. It is modelled in the round and so would display beautifully in the centre of a room.

L&F Moreau was a company consisting of two brothers, Louis Auguste Moreau and Hippolyte Francois Moreau. Both are well known and listed artists of the 19th century (see the Artprice database for more information). Hippolyte François Moreau (1832-1927) was the second son of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, Hippolyte Moreau went to work in Paris under the direction of Jouffroy and exhibited his first work at the Salon in 1859. The best of his work includes charming full figures of children and young women, mostly allegorical, often with the same subjects as used by Hippolyte's brother Louis. Louis Auguste Moreau (1834-1917) was the third son of Jean-Baptiste Moreau. He made his debut at the Salon in 1861 and exhibited abundantly until 1913. His style is realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau dynasty from Dijon.

The superb dial is enamel on copper, decorated with delicate floral swags between the hours. It is complete with it's original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex glazed bezel.

The French movement is by Samuel Marti and is of the clockmakers usual high standard. The Samuel Marti mark is on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been overhauled by our clockmaker and tested thoroughly to ensure faultless running. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original finish is beautifully clean and bright with some wear to the high spots such as her hair and arm. The marble is also in good condition with a good finish, there are some nibbles along the bottom edges and a small chip to the bottom edge on the left hand side. The dial is also in excellent condition, just some hairlines near he 7 o'clock. There is a light scratch on the glass. This is a stunning clock to add to your collection.

About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free.
